Our Story…

At the start of 2022, we set to work on developing a curriculum for churches to use in the education of K-5 children. Over the two previous years, we identified a need for a new kind of curriculum for children and trainings for churches that integrates emerging tools, strategies, and best practices in elementary education with Christian teaching that is holistic, inclusive and oriented toward acts of social justice and reconciliation in a community. We bring to this project many years of experience, work, reading and study in the areas of elementary education (Heather) and Christian history and theology (Aaron) along with our own journey as parents of four children.

Who We Are

Heather has been a public elementary school teacher for the past twenty years. Currently, she teaches third grade at our neighborhood elementary school where our children also attend. She got her Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Bushnell University in Eugene and her Master’s degree in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in Curriculum, Instruction and Design from Cal State Northridge. In her twenty years in education, Heather has taught everything from preschool to college in a variety of positions. She also uses this knowledge and experience to serve the community at CitySalt church as the co-director of children’s ministry. With four children, a dog, a cat and a fish, there isn’t a lot of free time, but when she can squeeze out a little time and space, Heather enjoys taking advantage of their pacific northwest home by hiking, enjoying good coffee with friends or sitting by the ocean.

Aaron has served in a variety of roles as a local church pastor and college instructor for the past fourteen years. He is currently a Project Faculty member in the Doctor of Global Leadership program at Portland Seminary and co-director of the children’s ministry at CitySalt Church. Prior to serving at CitySalt, Aaron pastored The Onyx House, a Christian co-ed residential community across from the University of Oregon campus, for seven years. Aaron earned a Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary and a PhD in Theology from the University of Wales in the UK. He is also a member of the Ecclesial Theologian Fellowship at the Center for Pastor Theologians. He loves going on adventures to new places with his wife, Heather, and four kids and his perfect day would involve an excellent cup of coffee (or two!), a hike to somewhere beautiful and serene, and some good conversation over a pint at a warm pub.
