FAQs

  • The current version of the StoryLine curriculum is designed for use with children Kindergarten-5th grade. It is ideal for 2nd and 3rd graders, but can easily be used for the entire elementary age range with small tweaks and adjustments.

  • The current version of StoryLine Kids comprises 60 lessons that can be used in for Kindergarten-5th grade in a mixed age or age-specific setting. In 2024, we plan to write up and down (a PreK-1st grade version and a 4th-6th grade version of the StoryLine sequence) while retaining the current version for 2nd-3rd graders.

  • The StoryLine curriculum is designed to be spiraling curriculum so that the basic lesson outline is the same from year to year. Adjustments and changes can be made to the supplementary activities, but the lessons themselves are meant to be repeated each year giving students much needed repetition in order to help them learn the material and provide space to connect with God around key concepts of the Christian faith. Spiraling also provides the ability to meet children where they are at developmentally. This makes space for play based learning while also appreciating the significant changes in brain development that children experience during their adolescent years.

  • Each lesson is delivered as a slide deck (8.5”x11” landscape) in a .pdf format that is easily printable. Teachers can teach off a hardcopy printed version or the digital version. Parent handouts, visuals, and other materials can be printed and/or copied directly from the slide deck. Occasionally, other printables are needed, and these are made available in .pdf format alongside the lesson. The lessons, unit overviews, and other materials are all downloadable in the Subscription area of the Storyline Kids website.

  • Unit overviews include a list of all supplies and materials needed for each lesson. Most lessons require some printing of digital materials and some basic craft/art supplies. Some lessons also suggest the use of published picture books that would need purchased beforehand. (See our blog post on building a children’s picture book library for more about our suggested book list).

  • Storyline lessons mostly use one of three Bible translations: The New International Version, The Inclusive Bible: The First Egalitarian Translation, and The Message. Occasionally, other translations are used to help communicate certain points. We have intentionally moved away from using entirely male pronouns to refer to God. Instead, we mostly use a non-gendered form. This helps to communicate to children the reality that God is not gendered, and that God is revealed to us in the Bible and in our lives through both female and male images and metaphors.
