End of Unit Service Project

At the end of the Psalms Unit (Israel’s Songbook), we decided to do a small service project to share some hope with our neighborhood. The last lesson in the Psalms unit is about songs of hope. The exploration activity is making some encouragement rocks decorated with a message or picture that others might find encouraging. We decided to make a small encouragement rock garden in an area at the back of the church property that gets a lot of foot traffic for some neighboring apartment complexes. Instead of doing our normal kids’ program, we worked together to weed, rake, lay down some bark mulch and then place the rocks that we decorated the week before. It was a great way to finish off the unit with a practical, hands-on activity that applies what we are learning in a tangible way. We are hoping to incorporate more service project Sundays into our schedule for the coming year.
